Singular Telom das, -s, Grundorgane fossiler Urlandpflanzen. Telome sind ungegliedert, radiärsymmetrisch und bestehen aus einem einfachen, zentralen Leitgewebestrang, einem Rindenmantel aus Grundgewebe und einer kutinisierten Epidermis. Die Verzweigung ist dichotom (gabelig). Die Telometheorie versucht die Entstehung der Organe der höheren Pflanzen als Folge der Differenzierung von Telomen durch fünf im Laufe der Evolution unabhängig voneinander und wiederholt abgelaufene Elementarprozesse zu klären: 1) Übergipfelung: Trennung ursprünglich gleichwertiger Telome in tragende Haupt- und assimilierende Seitenachsen; 2) Planation: Anordnung von Telomen in einer Ebene; 3) Verwachsung: Bildung flächiger Organe; 4) Reduktion: Verkleinerung einzelner Telome; 5) Einkrümmung: Ausbildung dorsiventraler Organe durch ungleiches Längenwachstum der einander gegenüberliegenden Seiten eines Teloms; wichtig für die Bildung von Fortpflanzungsorganen.
